Suspected cocaine worth Sh3.7 million seized in Lamu

Detectives also recovered heroin in different parts of the coastal region

Detectives have seized approximately 928 grams of suspected cocaine in an intelligence-led operation by the anti-narcotic unit in Lamu Central.

The operation, which led to the seizing of the substances estimated at Sh3.7 million, followed the heightened war against the sale, distribution and consumption of illicit drugs in the country.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said during the raids, several houses suspected to be illicit drug hubs were targeted.

It stated that in one of the targeted houses, a weighing machine and five pellets weighing approximately 85 grams were recovered.

In another, a clear polythene bag with cocaine weighing approximately 164 grams was seized while the officers recovered another polythene bag about 354g of the crack.

DCI added that in another house, they found cocaine weighing approximately 325 grams.

"As a result of these operations, seven individuals were apprehended on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking. All the suspects are in lawful custody pending arraignment," DCI said.

The officers also recovered suspected cocaine and heroin estimated at Sh3.7 million in street value in another operation conducted in other parts of Mombasa and Kilifi Counties.

In a swoop conducted in the wee hours of May 7, 2024, by a combined team of anti-narcotic unit (ANU) and Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) detectives, 50 grams of cocaine and 1.15kgs of heroin were recovered.

DCI said a suspect was apprehended in Kisauni, Mwandoni with approximately 50 grams of cocaine valued at Sh250,000.

Another was also arrested with a kilo of heroin with a street value of Sh3,000,000 while another had heroin weighing 150 grams, valued at Sh450,000.

The DCI stated that the three suspects are in lawful custody pending arraignment.
