The Meteorological department says moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Nairobi from late afternoon, evening and night on Tuesday.

In an update to its seven-day forecast issued Monday evening, the weatherman said most parts of the city will receive rains of up to 20mm which will later intensify to around 50mm in some areas.

Those to receive moderate rains of up to 20mm include Kasarani, Embakasi East and South, Roysambu, Kibra and Lang’ata.

The forecast, which is valid until Wednesday 8 am, indicates that Dagoreti South and North, Westlands and Roysambu will receive between 20mm to 50mm rains from late afternoon to nighttime.

As from 6 pm, the forecast shows that parts of Westlands will receive rains of between 50mm to 60mm.

The situation will remain unchanged until 3 am Wednesday when the rains are expected to drop to 20mm.

In its weather outlook for May 7 to 13, issued Monday evening, the Kenya Met said several parts of the country will continue experiencing rains.

“Heavy rainfall events are likely in some parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and the Rift Valley during the first half of the forecast period,” the agency said.

It added that some parts will also experience very cold nights of less than 10°C, particularly over some parts of the Central Highlands.

The projection shows that counties to be affected by extreme cold nights include Laikipia, Nyeri, Muranga and Kirinyaga.

The advisory indicated that night temperatures will coalesce between 10-15°C in Nairobi, Kiambu, Narok, Machakis, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu and Makueni counties.

The scenario will be no different in Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Trans Nzioia, West Pokot, Kakamega and Samburu.

“High average daytime temperatures of more than 30°C will be experienced in most parts of the Coast, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya,” the forecast showed.

“Rainfall intensities across the country are likely to reduce during the second half of the forecast period,” the weatherman said.

The Meteorological department, the government and humanitarian agencies including the Kenya Red Cross have continued to caution Kenyans against daring Mother Nature and attempting to cross flooded rivers or drive through waterlogged roads.

“If you encounter a flooded road, turn around, don't drown,” the Ministry of Health said.

“Seek alternative routes and exercise extreme caution on roads affected by heavy rains,” the ministry added.

Latest government data shows that 238 have perished as a result of drowning occasioned by massive flooding unleashed by torrential rains which have been ongoing for weeks now.
