A senior assistant chief in Malindi has been arraigned for receiving a Sh15,000 bribe five years ago.

Nicodemus Mwayele, the senior assistant chief for Shella in Malindi town, was arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

He was arraigned before Malindi senior resident magistrate Olga Onalo, who deferred the plea-taking to Wednesday before a gazetted anti-corruption judicial officer.

Onalo released Mwayele on Sh50,000 bail, which he had earlier deposited.

EACC detectives arrested the administrator, saying the bribery crime was committed in 2019.

Mwayele has been out on a Sh50,000 cash bail as the commission awaited the approval of the charges by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He is accused of receiving Sh15,000 from Kazungu Charo Mulambi to help resolve a land dispute at Muyeye trading centre.

The suspect allegedly demanded Sh20,000 from the complainant who was then given Sh15,000 to hand over to the administrator, leading to the initial arrest on September 2, 2019.

"He asked for a bribe over a land case from a man called Kazungu Charo. We gave Charo Sh15,000, which he handed over to the suspect with an agreement that he [Mwayele] will get the balance after the job is done,” Upper Coast EACC manager Ben Murei said.
