Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now says that the challenges that have been brought about by floods are heavy and as government they are not able to sleep.

The DP on Monday said that they have been receiving calls from all over the country, from people seeking assistance.

Gachagua was speaking on Monday when he chaired the National Disaster Response Steering Committee.

The committee held a meeting at the DP official residence in Karen.

"The challenge we are facing today is heavy, we are not able to sleep. Calls are coming from across the country, everybody is asking for food and non-food items. People asking for military choppers to assist in dropping food. People asking for support," Gachagua said.

The DP went on to say that the situation is dire and uncertainty remains over many aspects including the education of Kenyan children.

Gachagua however thanked Kenyans for understanding the efforts the State continues to put in place and their cooperation.

"Parents are very unsure of what will happen to their children, the children are at home and we have no date of when the schools will reopen," Gachagua said.

"It's a difficult time and I want to thank the people of Kenya for their cooperation and support," he noted.

The National Disaster Response Steering Committee met at the DP official residence on Monday.

Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, relevant MDAs, County Governments, the private sector actors, development partners and Diplomatic Missions, were also represented at the meeting.

The government activated a multi-agency emergency response centre at Nyayo House to facilitate response interventions to floods across the country.

The team is led by DP Gachagua.

Speaking during the activation, Gachagua said all displaced households would be facilitated to find alternative settlement and in extreme cases, the National Youth Service will provide shelter to the most vulnerable.

“The government, under the leadership of President William Ruto, will do whatever it takes [and] will apply all the required resources in terms of money and personnel to make sure that lives are not lost and the people of Kenya are protected from this disaster,” the DP said.
